A delicious, winter salad featuring blood oranges and balsamic vinegar. A delicious mix of sweet and savoury, the flavours in this salad are fresh, bright and just what you need this winter!
I really do have a bit of a blood orange obsession, and for good reason. These gorgeous little red oranges only appear for a short time every year, so I always have the urge to use them in EVERYTHING! They are great for topping smoothie bowls, in cocktails and on salads.
Before we dive right into this recipe, I want to tell you a bit about one of my amazing photographer friends, Tommy Reynolds. I’ve known Tommy for a couple of years, and all the pictures of me on my blog were taken by him!
Last week, I went to Tommy’s studio and we spent the day playing around with artificial light with this salad as the subject. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that something I really want to work on this year is shooting my food in artificial light. I want to have the flexibility to shoot when the winter brings cold, dark days, and for any on site food photography that might not have optimal natural light sources. Here’s Tommy’s vlog of the day, and what we discovered!
We spent the whole day experimenting with different types of soft boxes, angles, reflectors, negative fill, and we had SO much fun. I think we both learnt a lot, one of the things we both found fascinating, is that a light that looks perfect at one angle, for example side on, might not look right from a top down angle, so it’s always a case of experimenting, moving things around and adjusting.
The thing that seemed to remain consistent throughout all the shots we took, was that the larger the light source, the more natural the light looked, so we ended up working with a 150cm soft box for most of the day.
Blood oranges lend themselves really well to salads, their acidic quality perfectly balances the earthy, green leaves, and a hit of balsamic vinegar adds just a hint of sweetness. Throw on some avocado for creaminess, some nuts and seeds, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, winter, blood orange salad!
